Q: What is Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy?

A: Orthopedic manual physical therapy is a specialty branch of physical therapy. It requires rigorous training after the completion of physical therapy school. It is defined as, “skilled, hands-on soft tissue and joint mobilization techniques, combined with specific therapeutic exercise, to promote the optimal stimulus for soft tissue healing.” The use of manual therapy provides a more effective physical therapy treatment than just exercise and modalities alone. Orthopedic manual therapy treatment goes beyond traditional passive range of motion, stretching, and general exercise regimens often seen at most physical therapy clinics. Instead, orthopedic manual therapy enters a realm designed to enhance tissue tolerance and functional qualities. Orthopedic manual therapy is not protocol based. It is based on specificity of treatment. Due to the effectiveness of this treatment, all patients of MMPT receive appropriate manual therapy.

Q: What makes MMPT stand out from other clinics?

A: At MMPT, you will receive one-on-one care directly from a fellowship trained manual physical therapist. This is the highest credential one can attain in the area of orthopedic physical therapy. Your treatment will consist of both a manual and an exercise component. Our clinic is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, including a specialized pulley system, designed for rehabilitating specific injuries. This equipment is not meant for a gym setting. It is designed for a manual therapy based clinic.

Q: What do I need for my first MMPT visit?

A: You will need a photo ID, insurance card, physician’s referral (not mandatory) and claim information for accident related injuries. Please wear or bring comfortable, loose clothing for your session. Please arrive 15 minutes early for the first appointment to complete paperwork.

Q: What will happen at my first MMPT session?

A: Your therapist will review your medical history with you and perform a thorough evaluation. During this time, you will be able to explain your physical issue, provide any treatment history, and ask questions.

Q: Do I need a doctor’s prescription for physical therapy before I can come to MMPT?

A: You do not need a prescription to come to MMPT for help. We will assess you and create a treatment plan including an estimate for our services. The Illinois Physical Therapy Practice Act allows patients to seek physical therapy without needing a prescription from a healthcare professional.

Q: How long is a manual physical therapy session and how many times will I have to go before I’m better?

A: Our sessions usually are 45 – 60 minutes in length but may vary based on your condition and the techniques being performed during your visit. The length of time for treatment is dependent on many factors such as the type and severity of your physical issue, your compliance with your treatment plan and your body’s ability to respond. MMPT wants to get you back to the activities you love, as quickly as possible.

Q: Will my insurance cover the cost of my session?

A: Physical therapy is usually covered by your health insurance. MMPT will verify your insurance coverage before your first appointment. If you do not have insurance coverage, we will be happy to discuss costs and payment options.

Q: What is your cancellation policy?

A: We ask that you give us 24-hour notice when you must cancel or reschedule your session. You may be charged a $25 fee for not providing notice.
